Depolluting ALGAE [1/4]

Sample irradiation at the ILL

Samples of Coccomyxa actinabiotis algae grown in media enriched in various pollutants are irradiated at the ILL.

The samples are lowered into the storage pool of the reactor inside a used fuel element. The fuel element is highly radioactive as can be seen from the blue light it gives off (Cherenkov effect).
