2017 - (8'39") A film released for the APS conference

A film describing ILL, the world leader in neutron science. The film was displayed at the American Physical Society conference in March 2017.

2011 - (13'12") The reactor divergence in 2011 (in French)

This 13'12 movie (1920x1080 pixels) in French was produced internally at the ILL in 2011.
It shows the steps leading up to reactor criticality for a new cycle. It depicts the work of the various DRe teams as well as the actual start-up procedure in the control room.


2011 - (13'15") A short presentation film (3 mn)

This movie was produced by Artesia for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the divergence of the reactor (31 Aug 2011).

What can be seen in that movie:

  • The ILL facility, a view of the control room of the reactor presented by Hervé GUYON, level C, etc.
  • Instruments: IN5, SALSA, D4, D20, Eddy, BRISP, detector manufacturing, etc.
  • Animation showing the journey of neutrons before and inside a three axis spectrometer (TAS): the neutron source (reactor core), the neutron beam, the monochromator, the sample, the analyser and the detection of the neutrons scattered by the sample.

2009 - (3'05") ILL Open Day, 26 and 27 September

For the first time in 8 years, ILL opened its doors to the general public for two full days on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2009. We received 694 visitors, many of them expressing their great satisfaction. More than 100 members of staff took part in the organisation.
Here a short film (3'05") in French, broadcast in the local television France3 information session.

1973 - (45'29") Die stillen Stars/The quiet stars by Frank Elstner (German channel ZDF)

The full title is “Die stillen Stars: Nobelpreisträger privat geshen"
When R. Mossbauer (Nobel Price winner) took up the position of director at the ILL, the German television channel ZDF, produced a lenghty report with focusing on the German scientific community who had come to France to work at the RFH, as well on how they experienced the situation. ILL was undoubtedly the first ambitious post-war collaboration between France and Germany and, hence, an excellent subject for a television program.

This institutional movie covers the construction period of the High Flux Reactor and early times of the scientific life at the ILL.
This movie was recorded by a CEA team (G. Langlois, G. Marry and A. Muzzin) at the request of ILL and during the construction of the reactor and its first year of operation. In the version shown here, the first 10 minutes of the voiceover are in English but the rest is in French since the original English version of the movie is probably lost.
The times below are for the original French and German versions. For the mixed English/French version, add 3" for the Frech part.
1st part - 1967-1971: the construction
The High Flux Reactor and guide hall construction, the manufacturing of a uranium core, a neutron tube being inserted in the reactor vessel, neutron guides being installed, the old control room, etc. It also shows some of those who had the difficult task to start that new facility.
